NATURAL SLATING

275   SLATE FIXING — CENTRE NAIL:

  • Lay slates with an even overall appearance, with slightly open vertical joints (min 3mm), with tails of slates aligned.
  • Use slates of consistent thickness in any one course, laid with thicker end at the tail.
  • Use extra wide slates generally at ends of courses to maintain bond and ensure that cut slates are as large as possible. Do not use slates or cut slates less than 150mm wide.
  • Centre nail fix each slate through nail holes positioned 20-25mm from the side edges, with two copper nails. Nail heads should be driven down to within 0.5mm of the surface of the slate/countersink
  • Nails: Copper to BS 1202 part 2, of 3.35mm shank diameter and length to provide adequate withdrawal resistance and not less than 15mm penetration into the batten.

276   SLATE FIXING — SLATE HOOK:

  • Lay slates with an even overall appearance, with slightly open butt joints (min 3mm), with tails of slates aligned.
  • Use slates of consistent thickness in any one course, laid with thicker end at the tail.
  • Use extra wide slates generally at ends of courses to maintain bond and ensure that cut slates are as large as possible. Do not use slates or cut slates less than 150mm wide.
  • Hook fix each slate with one stainless steel slate hook driven fully into the batten. The slate hook length should be suitable for the specified head lap
  • Slate Hook: Stainless steel nail type and size to suite specified head lap.

277   SlateSpacer™:

  • Install one Standard SlateSpacer™ between each pair of slates, at the centre batten position, after slates have been nailed or hooked into position, to hang squarely.
  • Install Edge spacers on edge slates (at verges, side abutments and hips) without contacting nails.
  • All SlateSpacer™s should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's Installation Guide.
